Electron energy-loss spectroscopy studies of single wall carbon nanotubes
نویسنده
چکیده
We have carried out momentum-dependent measurements of the density response function of bulk samples of purified single wall nanotubes using electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Carbon nanotubes support both excitations between delocalized and localized electronic states. The p-plasmon exhibits significant q-dependence, with a dispersion relation similar to that of the graphite plane, demonstrating the graphitic nature of the nanotube electron system along the tube axis. In contrast, the interband excitations observed at low energy have vanishingly small dispersion in q. These excitations between localized states are related to characteristic interband transitions between the singularities in the nanotube electronic density of states, and can thus be used to show that our samples contain significant quantities of both semiconducting and metallic single wall nanotubes. 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Valence excitations in individual single-wall carbon nanotubes
We report on measurements of the plasmon losses of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes by electron energy-loss spectroscopy in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope. The experimental data are compared to simulated excitation probabilities calculated using the hydrodynamic theory of the interaction between a probe electron and a two-dimensional quasifree electron gas confined on...
متن کاملCollective oscillations in a single-wall carbon nanotube excited by fast electrons
Electron energy loss spectroscopy is a well adapted tool for the investigation of the valence excitations of individual nanometer-size particles. The interpretation of the loss spectra of such small particles, however, relies in most cases on a quantitative comparison with simulated excitation probabilities. Here we present a formalism developed for the interpretation of the energy loss data of...
متن کاملHybrid nanofluid based on CuO nanoparticles and single-walled Carbon nanotubes: Optimization, thermal, and electrical properties
The purpose of this study is to use the thermal and electrical conductivities of copper oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes for the preparation of high-performance nanofluids for achieving better heat transfer properties. These nanofluids consist of a water/Ethylene Glycol solution containing single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs). The effects of such...
متن کاملThin single-wall BN-nanotubes formed inside carbon nanotubes
We report a high yield synthesis of single-wall boron nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs) inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), a nano-templated reaction, using ammonia borane complexes (ABC) as a precursor. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), high angle annular dark field (HAADF)-scanning TEM (STEM), electron energy loss spectra (EELS) and high resolution EELS mapping using aberration-corr...
متن کاملFormation and electronic properties of BC3 single-wall nanotubes upon boron substitution of carbon nanotubes
We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the electronic and optical properties of highly boron-substituted (up to 15 at.%) single-wall carbon nanotubes. Core-level electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveals that the boron incorporates into the lattice structure of the tubes, transferring ,1/2 hole per boron atom into the carbon derived unoccupied density of states. The charge t...
